A most enjoyable tale, highly recommended.

Innumerable writers, it seems, have attempted to create copies of Sherlock Holmes, but failed due to a lack of appreciation for what makes Holmes so memorable. It's not his detecting methods alone, but that in combination with his personality.

Thorndyke is a perfect example. When it comes to scientific deduction and intriguing plots he can't be topped, but his personality is bland, as are--generally--those of his Watsons.
