To translate writings, you need a key to the code--and if the last writer of Martian died forty thousand years before the first writer of Earth was born ... how could the Martian be translated...?

This is one of my favorite short stories. It's about an archaeological expedition to Mars. It works on a few different levels - first, the premise on just how you translate an alien language. But also as something of an adventure story, the author really captured the feel of exploring an old ruined city.
