The Monk is remembered for being one of the more lurid and "transgressive" of Gothic novels. It is also the first book to feature a priest as the villain.
The story concerns Ambrosio - a pious, well-respected monk in Spain - and his violent downfall.

I love this book. It's very intriguing. It reads like a movie since the writing is so visual, exciting and complex.

An excellent gothic novel. Very similar to Jan Potocki's "The Manuscript Found in Saragossa", this is a classic tale of both supernatural beings and love.
