The problem lies in the fact that several of the XML files packed in the EPUB file are bigger than 250KB, which is the upper limit for Sony devices. The only possible way to solve this problem is to unzip the EPUB file, split the excessively big files ("main6.xml" and "main8.xml") into several smaller files, change the fb.opf file accordingly (including the newly created files), and then re-build the EPUB file with the new stuff. Hope this helps anybody… (more)

Now I'll proceed to actually read the book.
Aside from one or two slightly fantastic conceits, this is a hard science fiction novel in the tradition of Vernor Vinge or David Brin. It's also an alien-contact novel, and what an alien it is. I read a lot of SF and I've never seen something this strange and yet this plausible. As with most good hard-SF novels, it grabs you within the first few chapters and keeps you glued to it right through to the end. If for some reason you can't read the electronic version, just go out and buy the paperback;… (more)

The epub didn't work on my Sony 300. Best formatting solution I found was to load the Mobi/Kindle file, and convert to epub using Calibre.
Geeky stuff aside, what a great author - worth the (small) effort to rescue the file.
This is truly the best sci-fi book I've ever read. Watts' understanding of science is far-ranging and the story illustrates so many fine points of technology, consciousness and reality. But it's not just the knowledge, the man is an excellent writer. This is truly one of the finest books I've ever read in ANY genre. Amazing. And the idea that he's released the books into the public domain is wildly generous. Read this book.
The EPUB version didn't work on my Sony Reader (a PRS-505) either. I used the 'epub2lrf' program from Calibre to convert the file to BBeB format, and that conversion worked to make it readable.
Thank god for Peter Watts. This book scared the shit outta me as did all of his other ones. His writing was beautiful, and scary because I felt a true connection to real life. He made a bunch of charictors that you could hate but he forces you to fall in love with them, then he rips them apart. Read his other books too. They are just as good if not better and I hope he keeps writing like crazy. I wish and pray that someone makes at least one movie from one of his books. Just to see what it would look like on the big screen.
Watts has created one of the most fascinating alien species.
This is a heartbreaking book that forces the reader to reconsider the nature and importance of his own consciousness.
I found myself wondering what was it exactly I was reading. A sci-fi first contact story? A sci-fi horror story? A sci-fi existential story? Finally, I realized it was all those and then some more.

The EPUB version works fine on my computer but when transfered to my Sony Reader it will not open and merely says 'page error'.
