On 31 March 1836 the publishers Chapman & Hall launched the first issue of a new monthly periodical entitled The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. “Death and Mr. Pickwick” is, after a fashion, Seymour’s story, and it has some compelling elements. But it’s so weighted down with minutiae that it may defeat even the most rabid “Pickwick Papers” fan.

As such this is a masterpiece of imagination supported by a mountain of research.

A bravura exercise in fictionalised literary criticism, crammed with Dickensian jokes and allusions, commendably alert to the significance of the Urtext and its attraction to the original readership.
