His story, although less engaging than Vann’s previous fictions, is, none the less, a well-written, unflinching exploration of the often terrifying chasm between who we want to be, and who we actually are.

When you finally put this book down, break the spell and walk away, you’re left with a deeper resonance, a lingering sadness.

No author is better at making you lose your literary balance and a large part of his brilliance is that he knows how to adjust the level of derangement to just short of most disturbing.
