The Red-Haired Woman, like all good novels determined to deliver political and social criticism, understands that pleasure in the means of the delivery must equal the value of the thing said.

The twist in the tail isn’t perhaps quite as effective as that in My Name Is Red, but it still makes the reader feel as if they’ve emerged from the depths of a well into sudden and dazzling light.

The Red-Haired Woman is far from perfect: It's a minor work from a major author. Fans of the author may well find much to admire here; for those unfamiliar with his novels, it's inessential.
