I don’t mean to pull a Beckett on you here, but on San Miguel, nothing happens — thrice. Beautifully.

The island receives the most fully realized portrait of all, without hoary personifications of the wind or animal infestations, as a place persistently rejecting its inhabitants.

What San Miguel is not is one of those fashionably “linked” story collections, but a cohesive, headlong tale with temporal scope.
