Many fiction writers, from Twain to Nabokov to Welty, have delivered memoirs that stand alongside their best work. I wouldn’t go so far with “Miracles of Life.” Despite its shrewd bits, this slim book also has longueurs and repetitions, and Ballard’s prose had lost, by the end, a bit of its elastic snap.

An affectionate, incomplete recollection of life’s rich pageant.
