If Bulawayo is better at individual scenes than overall structure, she is at least in full command of her sparkling prose.
The (limited) strengths of “We Need New Names” deserve attention and measured praise, but for them to carry the novel is an onus too burdensome to bear.
Her hard, funny first novel is a triumph.
