I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp is made up of one such revelation after another, generous gifts to the reader.

As one of his most famous songs so spasmodically states, “Love comes in spurts.” And in Clean Tramp, so does Hell’s sensitive, sordid, bittersweet story.

The book is anything but diffident. It also has some well-worn tropes. Most (male) rock autobiographies and memoirs are at least in part an indexing of sexual conquests and drug abuse, and Hell’s book is smothered with them.
