There are some cracking jokes here, and Allende has made a fair stab at doing something different with the crime genre. But, as Jack the Ripper could tell you, you need to do better than a fair stab to be truly memorable.

Allende does conjure up a genuinely surprising twist at the end, but by then, most smart readers will be trying to cleanse all memory of this tedious romp, perhaps by sinking down, down, down into bathtubs of powdered milk.

Make no mistake, there is a psychopath behind the serial killings, and the novel picks up the pace after the first 300 pages, but for this reader, the punishment doesn’t fit the crime.
