Expo 58 is a comedy of manners fused, at times awkwardly, with the lineaments of a thriller. Coe has always enjoyed playing with different forms, but there is a sense here of the author shrinking from something more ambitious.

A comico-serious delight, the novel absorbs from start to finish; rarely has Belgium looked so plain, dark-chocolate dangerous or inviting.

This is entertainment of a very high order, and all the more delightful for being grounded in the more bizarre dimensions of reality, the inspiration of all the best fiction.
