Catton is clearly a gifted storyteller with a strong interest in experimental narrative structures. I will undoubtedly pick up her next book.

Eleanor Catton needs to be praised for the fact that she is able to sustain interest and intrigue for 800+ pages.... The Luminaries is an engaging novel that adventurous and patient readers will surely enjoy.

There are readers who will be fascinated by the structure and ambiguities of “The Luminaries.” But by and large, it’s a critic’s nightmare.
