For students of comedy, the history of race relations or the fatally flawed decade of the 1970s, “Becoming Richard Pryor” might be the sharpest image yet of a fearless figure who let his fears show so openly on his impossibly rubbery face.

Better written and more thoughtful than David and Joe Henry’s Furious Cool (2013). The latter remains worth reading, but this book is the place to start.
