Oyeyemi’s genius lies in her ability to show us our society and its fairytale double, both the truths we have always known and a fantastically weird dream we didn’t know we had been having.

Even though the final result is unfortunately, not as perfect as its promising beginnings, Boy, Snow, Bird is still a notable read of 2014.

Readers wanting a sprawling tale of family secrets will be satisfied as long as they are content to let the characters keep secrets from them as well.
