“And the Dark Sacred Night” echoes a culture that has taken perhaps too many photos of itself near bodies of water, grouped around roasted birds, amid carpets full of spent wrapping paper, flanking someone in a mortar board — a pre-formatted, self-congratulatory notion of family

It’s a big, messy, imperfect book that mirrors the messy imperfection of contemporary life, stuffed with hot-button details (from Greek yogurt and fair-trade coffee to gay marriage and grandparents’ rights), and sprinkled with small convincing moments of joy.

The delight of reading Julia Glass turns out to be the connections we make with her generous characters, who become as endearing — and exasperating — as the people we love in real life.
