This is the kind of Smiley novel le Carré would probably write if he were 20 years younger, if he knew the CIA as well as he knows the British security services

The novel’s conclusion may feel hurried and forced, but “The Director” leaves the reader with a keenly observed portrait of the C.I.A. as a “Rubik’s Cube of interlocking” intrigue in a world in which both the watchers and the watched are always under surveillance.

Although the subject is timely, Ignatius wades too far into the mechanics of malicious computer use to make this a compelling tale; he turns an exciting idea into a story that fails under the weight of dull and irrelevant detail.
