The tone is dark, perhaps too dark for the author to sustain. In this erratic novel, hope is not the thing with feathers.

It is painful, gut-wrenching, emotionally difficult, and brutally honest. It does not get much better than that.

Suspenseful, provocative, often terrifying yet compassionate, it pushes a variety of hot buttons — child homelessness, mental illness, nuclear energy — all while creating one of the most memorable teenage protagonists in recent fiction.
