While it's a very picturesque book, the payoff at the end is rather unfulfilling. The narrator is also a complete dolt.

This is one of my favorite short stories. It's about an archaeological expedition to Mars. It works on a few different levels - first, the premise on just how you translate an alien language. But also as something of an adventure story, the author really captured the feel of exploring an old ruined city.
