Nice story. Definitely makes me think of Robert Silverberg's short story,"The Man Who Never Forgot" published in 1958, I think, in Fantasy & Science Fiction. A topic that always fascinated me, as I would see people I met one time 10 or more years ago in passing, and they would think I was lying or conning them when I called them by name & gave specifics of our only meeting. Until something kicked in sometimes and they remembered small pieces themselves, though not me, and realized I was telling the truth. Usually they would be astonished to be remembered, and thought it would be great to have such a great memory. But mostly it was just frustrating. So I had to read your story. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I have also read some of your other writings. I am trying to read more after this story, my favorite so far.
Doctorow surprised me as a writer with a style of his own. I have enjoyed all of the stories in this book. Give him a chance and read anything of his you can find. I don't think you will be disappointed no matter what type of writing you prefer. He is a "keeper".
