I think you are right that Patience would be a great teacher. I would hope that our society would wait until the technology was well proven though before giving over our future to it. As for B, I was playing with the idea that technology gets rapidly cheaper. A new 19 inch B&W TV was $500 in 1959. I may have gone too cheap, but who knows. I would have never imagined that something like the iPad would be available for under $1000.
