You have to talk to them, counsel them, mesmerise them into stillness before you set foot anywhere near them. And, though I may not be considered wholly sane, at least I have a reputation for the way I talk to machines.

I've read a lot of SciFi in my time, and I have to say this is a great read. You have a skill in creating an interesting and plausible backstory which goes a long way in to helping to weave the story elements together. By the end I found myself wanting to know more about the characters, the floaters, the technologically regressive society they found themselves in. Good stuff ;)

Thank you Scott,
Yes, the machines were important characters. I didn't want them to be scary - just misunderstood - except by those who knew how to talk to them. I was also trying to create something nostalgic and romantic. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for taking time out to comment.
Best Wishes
Michael
