Consumerism is what keeps some economic systems going. If a recession hits, though, the economies that rely on consumerism are screwed. Our consumerist habits mess up the futures of young people in the Third World, and a somewhat planned economy provides a fall back in the case of recession. Canada’s economy should be partly controlled by consumerism, but only partly, so if the economy tanks, we have a fall back.
