This is a "science fiction" story that is, to a large part, a morality play that I enjoyed on both levels. Matthew Vandrew avoided overwhelming us with the details of the fictional and tragic "first contact" between the two races, adding details only as needed. This echoes the main character's habit of only communicating to those he loves when forced to, so that we're only made privy to his feelings and thoughts when he is forced to face them buy those he loves: his ET lover and his family.
