A member of Aosdána (the Irish Association to honour artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland), he has received numerous awards including the Irish Academy of Letters Award, the Scott Moncrieff Translation Prize, the Irish Times/Poetry Now Award and Lannan and Guggenheim Fellowships. He received the David Cohen Prize 2007 for recognition of a lifetime’s achievement in literature. The Rain Bridge (A Story for Rory, with illustrations by Sarah Iremonger) and Rising Late (poems, with drawings and paintings by Donald Teskey) were published in 2017.
